When Pus Comes to Shove

Platypus is the end result when you put together Ty Tabor (King's X) on vocals and guitars, Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater) on keyboards, Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs) on drums, and John Myung (Dream Theater) on bass. The music is pretty good: one of the best things about this album is the great mix of the rhythm and the keyboards. Derek Sherinian, in my view, fits better here than he did in Dream Theater. Highlights of the album include Standing in Line (a fairly decent rock tune), Nothing to Say (a pretty cool ballad), Rock Balls/Destination Unknown (featuring some great guitar solos), I'm with You (great complementary keyboard/guitar work), Willie Brown (aggressive guitar and keyboards), and What About the Merch? (a cool funky tune---my favourite on the album). Definitely worth a spin.
