Ram Samudrala

My first, but not only, love is science (which I do not distinguish from philosophy or art). I hold a tenured faculty position at the University of Washington in Seattle doing research in the area of computational biology. Specifically I work on protein folding, structure, function, design, and evolution at the single molecule as well as the genomic/proteomic levels. My ultimate goal is to be able to understand (and computationally reproduce) how an organism's genome specifies its behaviour and characteristics.

My interests are varied. First and foremost, I'm a computing nerd. I love music; I play the guitar, write, and record music as well, and publish stuff under the name of TWISTED HELICES: The biggest (musical) compliment I've been paid is being called "the bastard child of Ween and the Residents." Among other things, I like to hike, fly, mountain bike, rollerblade, ski, travel, adventure, play games, and argue. Besides my research, science and philosophy are also among my passions. I read a lot, particularly comic books, watch way too much TV, as well as movies, shows, and plays. I am ordained as a Reverend in the Universal Life Church (even though I'm a staunch atheist) and started the Church of the Almighty Revealed in Biotechnology which explains my religion. I am against the notion of "intellectual property", and everything I create is copiable without restrictions.
